Why Do Catholics Pray the Rosary?

The Rosary is a meditation not just a repetition of the same prayers.  Meditation for Catholics is different than other religions.  Most people think of meditation of a clear mind or conscious but Catholic meditation is active and reflective.  While praying the rosary Catholics reflect on the mysteries of Jesus Christ.  This reflection brings us closer to Christ’s suffering and sorrow, joys, teachings and glory.   The Rosary is an extremely powerful prayer and should be prayed daily.

The Prayer:

Each day focus on one Mystery.  Below is the traditional order of reflection:

  • Monday – Joyful Mysteries
  • Tuesday – Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Wednesday – Glorious Mysteries
  • Thursday – Luminous Mysteries
  • Friday – Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Saturday – Joyful Mysteries
  • Sunday – Glorious Mysteries

Details of the Mysteries are:

The Sorrowful Mysteries:

  • The Agony in the Garden
  • Scourging at the Pillar
  • Crowning with Thorns
  • Carrying the Cross
  • Crucifixion

The Joyful Mysteries:

  • The Annunciation to Mary
  • The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth
  • The Nativity
  • The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
  • Jesus teaching in the temple at age 12

The Glorious Mysteries:

  • The Resurrection
  • The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven
  • The Descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost
  • The Assumption of Mary
  • The Coronation of Mary

The Luminous Mysteries:

  • The Baptism of Jesus
  • The Wedding Feast at Cana
  • Jesus Establishing the Kingdom of Heaven
  • The Transfiguration
  • The Institution of the Eucharist

How to Pray the Rosary:

  • Make the Sign of the Cross
  • Say the Apostles Creed
  • Say one Our Father
  • Say three Hail Marys
  • Say the Glory Be to the Father

(This covers the first three beads of the Rosary)

  • Announce the First Mystery of the Mystery you are reflecting
  • Say One Our Father
  • Say ten Hail Marys while reflecting on the mystery – one for each bead
  • Say the Glory Be to the Father
  • Say the Fatima Prayer – “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.”

(You do this five times, while announcing the mystery you are reflecting on prior to each decade of the Rosary)

Conclusion Prayers of the Rosary

  • Say one Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina)
  • Closing Prayer – Let us pray. O GOD, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The Rosary is a beautiful prayer and needs to be a part of your life.  The Rosary can change the world and you.

“The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life.
It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings.  There is no more excellent way of praying.”

-Pope Leo XII

@girly. Have you ever asked someone to pray for you? well, if you have, then by your terms, you are ‘praying to a false idol’. This is essentially what we do when we pray to Mary. We are asking her intercession.

This is a load of bull crap

  11. RosaryWarrior says:

How sad for those of you who have such a misconception of why we Catholics Pray the Rosary. We Pray the Rosary with Mary, not to Mary. She is not a vessel! SHE IS THE MOTHER OF OUR SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. Get your facts straight before you Babble…..

  12. [...] must be acceptable. Secondly, the 20 Mysteries of the Rosary are dedicated to remembering and meditating on occurrences that have to do with the Son of Man – Jesus in His human form. Meditation, in the [...]

  13. Vic Bass Jr. says:

@girly. You are partly right about Mary, but not just an ordinary vessel, but as our own precious Ark. Because in her “Womb” was Jesus who brought to us the New Covenant. So if the Jews during the time of Moses had the Ark of the Old Covenant, we Christians had our own Ark of the New Covenant, through Mary.

Good Comparison of the Two Arks:

The Ark of the Old Covenant had 3 items in it with each symbolic meanings:

    1. The Stuff of Moses – Which symbolizes AUTHORITY
    2. The Tablet – Which symbolizes the WORD OF GOD
    3. The Manna – Which symbolizes life sustaining BREAD

The Ark of the New Covenant (Mary) Jesus attributes:

    1. Jesus – The KING OF KINGS
    2. Jesus – The WORD that was made flesh
    3. Jesus = The LIVING BREAD

So we Christians must be very proud of our very own Ark (Mary). And we should be grateful to her BIg YES when she accepted God’s plan for our salvation. Can you just imagine, had she say NO? I don’t know what will happen to us now. Because without Christ there are NO Christians.

Well, for those who opposed and don’t believe in Praying the Rosary
Thank you guys anyway for spending your time reading and responding to it.
Especially for Gerly….I would suggest try it, try to pray the rosary ALONE and you will
discover yourself the answer to your own question. It’s hard to explain the feeling because it comes from within. You have all the right to do it … You’re free! God bless you.

  18. Being raised in a strong Christian household my whole life, accepting Jesus into my heart at a young age and going through Christian school, all I have to say, is the only person that can save you is the Lord Jesus Christ. Not Mary, the pope or the saints. Also, has anybody read the BIBLE???

  19. Richard says:

Terra! You were taught exactly what us Catholics are taught. The only one who can save me is Jesus, but I have a mother In heaven who prays for me, the Pope is a unbroken chain of Popes beginning with Peter you know, the Rock. Jesus Christ in the year 33 founded his church, who founded yours, you all broke off and have made your own sects.

  20. Richard says:

All of your strong Christian beliefs all root from mother church , we wrote the bible now you want to beat us over the head with our own book, everyone was Catholic before Martin Luther. Read your bible you say thats what we do at daily Mass its all bible.and we pray for all you separated brothers and sisters. Love in Christ Jesus and Mary. Richard

  21. Jesus is Lord says:

I never knew why people pray this thing they call the rosary or evendors to Marray for that matter.. God the Father told us plain as day not to pray and worship things that can’t see nor hear. Just because Marry had Jesus as a virgin, that does not give us the right to automatically pray to her or this rosary thing that was made by man. If you are not reading the standard KJV.. nothing else. That is: who ever pray to other people and other gods you are worshiping them. God told us that ALL! Praise and glory goes to Him. And no one can have part in His kingdom unless you go through him and him only. Not Marry, not a rosary and sure not a pope that calls himself the holy father. Wake up people do not be deceived. Call no man upon the earth your father, for there is only one Father which is in haven.

  22. Another Soul says:

Very interesting. Driving home tonight, I listened to a Catholic radio station and it was playing the rosary over and over. I’m not Catholic. It hit me that it was a meditation. It was a whole lot better than what was in my head, and I never felt like I was praying to Mary. It was weird, but I never felt that way. It was comforting, and very very nice. I don’t know..jury is out. But I’m going to check it out.
