The best explanation I have read is that it is a short term solution. There will always be rich and poor. This solution will not end poverty. This topic is also referenced in scripture. In Matthew 26:8-11, a woman anoints Jesus’ feet with very expensive oils. “When the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” Since Jesus knew this, he said to them, “Why do you trouble this woman? She has performed a good service for me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.”
The key to helping the poor is by the giving of the entire Church including its laity. People should always give a portion of what they can to help the poor. The Catholic Charities or your local parish can always push you in the right direction. Also, most parishes have an outreach collection to give to charities that help others in need. Lastly, it is not always only about the money, you could also volunteer your time and efforts to help the poor and others in need. We are the Church. We all must do something. As stated in the Gospel,” you will always have the poor with you”, but we can do more to help.
